Angels hope to bounce back against Jays

Baseball Betting Lines

05/25/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - One night after being shut down by a young Toronto Blue Jays left-hander, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will attempt to bounce back against another tough southpaw when these two teams resume a three-game series this evening at Angel Stadium.

Toronto got the upper hand in this set behind a sensational showing out of Brett Cecil on Monday, with the sophomore hurler firing 7 1/3 shutout innings to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-0 triumph.

Cecil (4-2) yielded just two hits and a pair of walks before giving way to reliever Jason Frasor in the bottom of the eighth. Scott Downs came on in the ninth to finish up the three-hitter and nail down Toronto's eighth win in 12 games.

"I didn't feel good in the pen or the first five innings," Cecil admitted. "My arm felt stiff, but I was hitting my spots and using my offspeed stuff. I was able to keep [the ball] down in the zone."

Adam Lind led the Blue Jays offensively with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance at the plate. John Buck and Vernon Wells added RBI singles for Toronto, which moved to 3-3 on its current eight-game road trip and an impressive 16-9 as the visitor this season.

The Angels, losers of three of their last four contests, received a solid outing from starting pitcher Joe Saunders (3-6) in defeat. The left-hander worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six.

"I thought Joe pitched well," Angels manager Mike Scioscia remarked. "He wasn't locked in like the last couple of games, but he gave us a chance to win. We just couldn't get any offense going."

Anaheim's bats could be quiet again tonight, with Toronto ready to send Ricky Romero to the hill in game two of this series. The former first-round selection brings a 4-1 record and a strong 2.71 season earned run average into this evening's tilt and has been dynamite in each of his last two appearances.

Romero threw his first career shutout in a home victory over Texas on May 15, limiting the Rangers to five hits and matching a personal best with 12 strikeouts, and also pitched well in a no-decision at Seattle this past Thursday. He held the Mariners to a run and four hits over a 6 2/3-inning stint, but was denied a win when the Toronto bullpen coughed up a lead in the ninth.

The Los Angeles native, a product of nearby Cal State Fullerton University, also delivered an outstanding start against the Angels last month. Romero surrendered just one run and five hits over eight sharp innings at the Rogers Centre back on April 18, although he still wound up taking the loss in a tough-luck 3-1 setback to the Halos that day.

Romero did defeat Anaheim as a rookie in 2009, tossing six innings of two-run ball in an 8-3 verdict at Toronto last August. This will be the 25-year-old's first-ever start at Angel Stadium.

Ervin Santana opposed Romero in that April 18 encounter and put forth his best effort of the season to outduel the Toronto lefty. The 2008 American League All-Star went the distance on a four-hitter and took a shutout into the ninth inning before giving up a two-out solo homer to Lind. He also struck out six without a walk while throwing 70 of 106 pitches for strikes.

Santana received a loss and three no-decisions in four starts following that gem, but returned to the win column by permitting three runs -- two earned -- through six innings in a home victory over Oakland on May 15. He followed up with seven excellent frames to best the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, allowing just one unearned run and striking out six to improve to 3-3 on the season.

In seven lifetime matchups with Toronto, the native Dominican has gone 3-3 with a 4.95 ERA.

Santana's splendid start completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays from April 16-18. Anaheim had also topped Toronto in five of the past seven meetings between the teams held at Angel Stadium prior to last night's loss.

American Idol odds : Blake Lewis the Early Standout

An important American Idol betting lines recap from February 20 Guys episode. The 12 men came out flat overall with Blake Lewis appearing to have the early edge after the first hour and a half.

Rudy - was quite good singing "Free Ride" to start off.  Randy was not impressed though.  Paula thought he started off fantastic.  "Never had anyone stop off so lively" said Paula but Simon (who does not like Rudy) does not feel he has a distinct voice and was not impressed either.

Brandon was a little pitchy according to Randy and Paula agreed.  Simon said he was a good singer but the song was "too safe" and he needs to make an impact.  He was listed at +1200 odds or $1200 paid out on a $100 bet should he win the competition.

Big favorite Sundance came in with a flat version of "Knights in White Satin" and the judges let him have it, including Paula.  Randy claimed the song was out of pitch throughout.

Korean American - and a Jenny Woo favorite - Paul Kim was up next.  Another pitchy flat one but Randy said he still liked his potential.  Kim at +3000 odds was said to have sung a "third rate version of that (George Michael) song" according to Simon Cowell.  He sang "Careless Whisper".

22 year old Chris Richardson was up next.  He was listed with +1100 odds coming in.  He got the best response from the judges though Simon did not believe the vocal was that great.

Nick was boring and pitchy.  Simon didn't think he was that bad though and predicted he would be back next week.  Nick Pedro was a big +3000 dog coming into this competition.

Beat boxer Blake Lewis was listed with early +1000 odds or $1000 payout on a $100 bet if he were to become the next American Idol winner odds .  These of course were the early odds.  He was considered original for picking an "odd song".  He did not beat box and the judges felt it was the best vocal of the night.

Sanjaya came in as the second biggest favorite after Chris Sligh but his performance Tuesday night was not very good.

Chris Sleigh was the early favorite at +450 odds.  Great voice and a great sense of humor.  He's a real standout.  Randy felt it was on point but maybe ahead of the chorus a little bit.  Simon Cowell said he felt like he was in some "sort of weird student gig".

Jared Cotter followed.  He was listed with +2000 odds early on to win the competition.  The judges felt he needs to take more risks but looked good.

22-year old AJ Talbado, who has tried out for American Idol five times, was up next.  "Kind of a theme park performance" said Simon.  Though the judges felt he performed okay.  Simon did feel AJ might be better than he originally thought.

Phil - this season's military favorite - came into this competition with +1200 odds to win the competition.  He was the last to perform.  He was certainly strong enough to get through this stage of the competition and perhaps the best one after a shaky start.

Tomorrow night, the ladies perform and I sure hope they do a better job than the boys.  Check out all the American Idol betting odds here.
