04/11/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy tries for his third win in as many starts this evening, when the San Diego Padres open a three-game series against Brad Penny and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
Peavy, who won pitching's triple crown in the NL last season, has been absolutely tremendous in his first two starts this season, surrendering just a run and five hits in 16 innings. He was sensational against the Dodgers this past Saturday, as he won his eighth straight decision against them with a complete-game gem. Peavy allowed just a run and two hits, while striking out eight and walking a batter.
After the game, though, photos showed a dark substance on Peavy's right thumb, index and middle fingers. Peavy said it was a just a mix of rosin and dirt and laughed off any suggestion that he could be doctoring the ball.
The 26-year-old right-hander is an incredible 10-1 lifetime versus the Dodgers with a 2.21 earned run average in 19 starts. He also hasn't lost to them since 2003.
Peavy will be opposed again by Penny, who suffered his first loss of the season on Saturday to the Padres. Penny gave up four runs and 10 hits over six innings in that one, as he fell to 1-1 while having his ERA raised to 2.84.
Penny has struggled in his career against the Padres, posting a 3-7 mark with a 5.63 ERA in 15 starts.
Both teams had a day off on Thursday, but both enter this series on losing streaks as well. San Diego dropped the final two of their three-game series with the San Francisco Giants, while the Dodgers were swept in three games by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
San Diego was 0-for-19 with runners in scoring position over the final two games with the Giants and its last 20 hits have all been singles.
Meanwhile, Dodgers first baseman James Loney has hit safely in all nine games his team has played this season and is hitting .364. At the other end of the spectrum is newcomer Andruw Jones, who is hitting just .129.
Things will probably not get better for Jones tonight, as he is a paltry 1- for-18 lifetime against Peavy.
Los Angeles took two of three from the Padres earlier in the year, but San Diego is 24-15 in the series since the start of the 2006 season, including an 11-7 mark at Chavez Ravine in that time.
