Ducks get the Blues

Hockey Betting Lines

01/16/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The St. Louis Blues have been playing better hockey as of late, but they'll face a tough test tonight when they continue their West Coast road trip against the conference-leading Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center.

The Blues had won eight of their last 11 outings, including three in a row, when they began this four-game swing Monday in Phoenix. St. Louis came up just short in the opener, as the Coyotes' Ladislav Nagy scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give Phoenix a hard-fought 5-4 decision.

Radek Dvorak scored once and assisted on another for the Blues, who still managed a point for the fourth straight game, and Peter Cajanek notched a pair of assists. Christian Backman, Dennis Wideman and Peter Sejna also had goals for St. Louis.

Manny Legace made 39 saves in regulation and overtime, but was beaten on two of four chances in the shootout.

The Blues, who will also play Los Angeles and San Jose on the trek, are just 7-10-5 on the road this season.

Anaheim leads the NHL with 68 points at the moment and has dominated this series recently. The Ducks have won five straight over St. Louis, including a pair of victories already this season.

The Blues have are also winless in their last seven visits to the Honda Center, suffering six losses and a tie over that span. St. Louis last won in Anaheim on March 17, 2002.

The Ducks are in a bit of a rut, however. The club has dropped six of its last eight contests and was beaten at home by Colorado in a shootout on Saturday. Milan Hejduk had the deciding goal in the fourth round to lift the Avalanche to the 3-2 triumph.

Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist for Anaheim, while Curtis Glencross picked up his first career goal in his first NHL game.

Ilya Bryzgalov struggled between the pipes, as the Ducks goaltender made just 15 saves through the first 65 minutes and stopped only two of four tries in the shootout.

Anaheim will be playing the 1,000th game in franchise history tonight. The Ducks own a lifetime record of 411-436-45, with 107 ties.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
